Statement on the 49th Anniversary of Medicare Being Signed Into

Statement

U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01) released the following statement on the 49th anniversary of Medicare being signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 30, 1965:

"Medicare began 49 years ago as a way of providing our seniors and disabled Americans with what President Lyndon Johnson called 'the healing miracle of modern medicine.' It has since proven its value and importance, growing into one of the most popular and successful programs in our nation's history.

"I remain absolutely committed to protecting Medicare from any changes that would diminish its effectiveness and saddle our seniors with additional costs. On the historic anniversary of this vital program, I ask everyone to join me in a continuing promise to fulfill what I believe is our nation's moral obligation."

Today, Medicare provides health coverage to over 47 million Americans, and is the largest health care provider in our nation.
