Congresswoman Hahn Believes New EPA Standards Will Save Lives in Wilmington

Statement

Date: July 18, 2014
Location: San Pedro, CA

Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44) released the following statement regarding the EPA's national refinery pollution standards:

"The EPA's newly proposed national standards to curb toxic refinery emissions will save lives in my district and across the country. The Wilmington community ranks fifth worst in air quality in the nation. With three refineries in the surrounding area, air pollution has reached dangerous levels and residents are at a higher risk of developing asthma, lymphoma and other cancers.

"These necessary standards are welcomed but long overdue. The health and wellness of families in my district has suffered for decades. I appreciate the EPA holding a hearing in Wilmington about this dangerous issue and I encourage local residents to submit their own comments directly to the EPA before the Aug 29 deadline."
