Republican Senate nominee Ben Sasse on Monday urged President Barack Obama to travel to Central America and halt the migration of unaccompanied children into the United States.

"He needs to say to the people of Latin America: 'The United States borders are not open, we are not going to have amnesty,'" Sasse said.

And, Sasse said, the president needs to tell Central Americans: "Please, keep your babies with you, don't break up your families, don't load your kids onto trains."

Directing his remarks at Obama, Sasse said: "Mr. President, the time to act is now. Not out of a political motive, but because it's the right thing to do and because you're a dad, too."

Sasse's remarks were voiced in an online video message released by his campaign.

A trip to Central America to halt the children's migration would "set the record straight and put an end to the suffering," Sasse said.

It's time to halt this "horrible human tragedy," he said.

"Little kids are leaving their parents every day and being handed over to human traffickers," Sasse said.

The families believe Obama will provide amnesty and U.S. citizenship to the children, he said, and that belief must be dispelled to halt the migration.

"Every day that this is allowed to continue, more little kids are going to get hurt -- more human trafficking, more assaults and more grief," Sasse said.

"Go to Central America and stop the bleeding."

Tens of thousands of unaccompanied children from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala have poured across the southern U.S. border and will be scheduled later for immigration hearings that lead toward deportation or, in some cases, refugee status.
