U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement congratulating Indonesia's new President-elect Joko Widodo:

"I congratulate President-elect Joko Widodo on being elected the next president of Indonesia. This is a historic milestone for the Indonesian people -- the transition from one elected civilian leader to another -- and another demonstration of why Indonesia's democratic development is an inspiration to the world. The end of this long, hard-fought campaign should be a time for unity among Indonesians, a time to take pride in everything their country has achieved and to join together to confront the challenges ahead.

"I am optimistic that President-elect Widodo can lead Indonesia to new heights, and that he can build on the progress that has been achieved under President Yudhoyono, especially when it comes to Indonesia's regional and international leadership. Indeed, at a time of growing global turmoil and challenges that affect all of us, from the Middle East to the Asia-Pacific region, the world needs the power of Indonesia's example and leadership now more than ever. The United States has a strong stake in the continued rise of a democratic, prosperous, and strong Indonesia, which is an indispensible foundation of our strategic partnership.

"I look forward to visiting Indonesia soon and having the opportunity to meet with President-elect Widodo and other Indonesian leaders to consult on the many ways that our countries, as partners, can advance our shared interests and democratic values."
