Alabama representative, Mo Brooks-(R) and a New York representative, Bill Owens- (D) have introduced a new bill that could increase a veterans chance of being hired by the Veterans Administration.

The bipartisan bill named Veterans Assistance to Lower Unemployment and Enhance VA Services Act or VALUES for short, would give veterans a higher preference in being hired by the Veterans Administration.

Mo Brooks, Alabama Representative from Huntsville says, "What I'm trying to do with this legislation is dramatically increase the probability that a veteran will be able to get a job with the Veteran's Administration by increasing the number of points in the applicant grading system that the veterans administration has."

Brooks says the bill would also solve another problem veteran's face. "Veterans are the ones most motivated to help their brothers and sisters in arms who have health care needs so let's put more veterans in the Veteran's Administration," Brooks said.

Tom Hartley, a Vietnam Veteran who was in the army for 24 years says he hopes this bill is passed quickly.

"How could you not support that in that it's a golden opportunity for these military personnel on whether they have done 4 years or 24 years as I did to be able to get that foot up," Hartley said.

According to a 2014 Bureau of Labor report Veterans who served in the Gulf War era were at 6.3% unemployment rate. Brooks says if this bill is passed it would only have positive outcomes.

"I see it as a win for our veterans who are receiving health care I also see it as a win for our veterans who have come home from servicing our country and can't find employment this gives them a leg up in the veteran's administration," Brooks said.
