Issue Position: Protecting Social Security and Medicare

Issue Position

During his decades of service in Congress, Representative Conyers has led the fight to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare from cuts and privatization schemes. He understands these benefits have been earned over a lifetime of hard work and that our country must honor its promises to our seniors. He is a sponsor of H. Con. Res. 72, which states that Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security benefit cuts should not be part of any deal in Congress aimed at reducing the deficit.

Representative Conyers opposes risky Republican plans that would privatize Social Security, exposing it to stock market fluctuations. He has spoken out against the Ryan-Romney proposal to turn Medicare into a Voucher system, ending the program as we know it and forcing seniors to negotiate on their own with private health insurance market while paying increased health care costs of more than $6,000 per year. Representative Conyers has opposed the harmful plan put forward by Republicans in Congress that would cut Medicaid funding by 34 percent. This deplorable proposed cut would slash health care funding for the poor and for the elderly who live in nursing homes and assisted living centers.
