Hoyer Statement on President Obama Signing the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act into Law

Statement

Date: July 22, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama signed into law the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, part of House Democrats' Make It In America jobs plan:

"I was pleased to be at the White House today as President Obama signed into law the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. This legislation is an example of what Democrats and Republicans can achieve in Congress when we work together to invest in training and securing a twenty-first century workforce -- one of the key goals of the Make It In America plan. This law reauthorizes important workforce investment and training programs that help job seekers and dislocated workers learn in-demand skills for jobs that pay well and help support families in the middle class.

"However, there is still much work for Congress to do -- and it ought to build on the bipartisan passage of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act by bringing Make It In America legislation to the Floor without delay. Congress has a responsibility to invest in creating the conditions necessary to attract advanced manufacturing businesses to our shores and ensure that they can hire skilled workers for jobs that won't be shipped overseas. I will continue to push for legislation to do so, and I hope Democrats and Republicans can work together to help more of our manufacturers and our people Make It In America."
