FitzGerald: "ODE Superintendent Must Resign"

Press Release

Date: July 24, 2014
Location: Columbus, OH
Issues: Education

Democratic gubernatorial nominee and Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald released the following statement on the investigation into the latest string of scandals at Ohio charter schools:

"It is clear change is needed at the Ohio Department of Education. That it took pressure from courageous teachers and outside organizations for the Department of Education to take action on these allegations is outrageous. And it is shocking that Dr. Ross and the Department of Education are now skirting their own responsibility and going down the path of attacking the teachers who pointed out the Department's failures.

John Kasich should demand Superintendent Ross' resignation. The Governor should then appoint an independent counsel to investigate these incidents as well as others that may be happening in Ohio's charter schools. This is what happens when you weaken accountability and oversight. This is a moment for the Governor to show leadership and shake up charter schools that are not only failing to educate Ohio's children but are also dangerous. It is the absolute minimum the Governor can do for Ohio's children and families."
