Marchant Joins Sen. Cruz in Supporting Lawsuit Against President

Statement

Date: July 17, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) today issued the following statement in response to Senate Republicans' praise of the House lawsuit against President Obama for his abuse of executive power:

"I join Senator Ted Cruz in praising the House for its lawsuit against the president. As Senator Cruz said of the lawsuit, "It is terrific that the House of Representatives is trying to hold President Obama accountable for his lawlessness.'

"Only the legislative branch -- Congress -- is permitted to make, amend, and repeal laws under the Constitution. If the executive attempts to suspend or rewrite laws -- as this president has done by unilaterally revising, delaying, or reinterpreting Obamacare 38 times -- it is against the constitutional lawmaking process. Instead of going through the required legislative process, the administration delayed the employer mandate for an entire year via a Treasury Department blog post. The executive's circumvention of Congress should never be taken lightly.

"The House Committee on Rules has taken a productive first step in moving a lawsuit against the president. Like many of my House and Senate colleagues, I support this move to keep the power of the executive in check and reign in constitutional overreach. No American -- not even the president -- is above the law."
