Today, Monroe County Circuit Judge Luis Garcia, issued a ruling declaring Florida's ban on gay marriage, unconstitutional.
"Today is a proud and historic moment for our district, our community, and our state" declared Garcia. "I am hopeful that today's ruling will help pave the path for other communities to honor equality and provide equal justice for all."
The Sunshine State is the most recent state to receive such ruling since the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its historic marriage decisions last June.
In his ruling, Judge Garcia wrote, "This court concludes that a citizen's right to marry is a fundamental right that belongs to the individual." Judge Garcia determined that same-sex marriage licenses will not be issued in Monroe County until next Tuesday, July 22, unless a stay is requested by the state attorney general and granted by the state court of appeals or Florida Supreme Court.
