U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement on the Obama Administration imposing new sanctions on Russia:

"I am pleased that the Administration moved forward with new sanctions on Russia, especially in light of the inability of our European allies to formulate a strong and unified response. This was a necessary step, but no one should think it will be sufficient to change Russia's efforts to destabilize Ukraine. That will require, in part, the imposition of true sectoral sanctions on Russia, which the Administration's new sanctions are not, despite the efforts of some to portray them as such.

"Changing President Putin's calculations will also require a long-term effort to support Ukraine in rebuilding and reforming its armed forces. That effort needs to start immediately with the provision of weapons, including anti-tank and anti-air capabilities, which Ukrainian leaders have repeatedly requested. It is shameful that the Administration continues to refuse to provide our Ukrainian partners with the military capabilities they both want and need."
