Rep. Waxman Statement on FCC Proposal to Modernize E-Rate Program

Statement

Date: July 10, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman issued the following statement today on the Federal Communications Commission's pending adoption of a Report and Order modernizing the E-Rate program:

"I support the FCC's efforts to modernize and streamline the E-Rate program. Chairman Wheeler has put forward a set of responsible, common-sense proposals to improve transparency and cost-effectiveness of E-Rate purchases, ensure a more equitable funding distribution, eliminate wasteful spending on antiquated equipment and services, while closing the "Wi-Fi gap' left open by inadequate funding for in-school connectivity essential for our students and communities to learn and compete in the 21st century economy.

"I believe the FCC can strike the right balance in maximizing ongoing support for broadband infrastructure to schools and libraries while enhancing much-needed access for in-classroom connections such as Wi-Fi. This is a good first step in E-Rate reform and the agency should use the data and information it collects as part of this effort to improve the program even more. I am hopeful the FCC will open a bright new chapter for E-Rate tomorrow so it can continue to fulfill its universal service goals."
