Issues: Education Family

Last year the legislature passed SB314 which recognized that parents have the fundamental right to direct the upbringing, education and care of their child. I wish I had been your elected assemblywoman at that time because I would have championed such a bill. However, now that it has been passed, I am intent on preserving its integrity.

As a mom, I am very concerned about education, and about my right to choose the form of education that best fits my child. As you may be aware, our children are not one size fits all. A school that works for your eldest, might not meet the needs of your middle child. I believe YOU, as the parent, should choose what setting is right for your child.

It's also very important in this conversation, to be aware of the options available to your family. My family made the informed decision to homeschool. While I understand that is not an option that everyone would choose, it is a legal and valid option in Nevada. I fully support an atmosphere of choice and advocate that every parent should know their options, be it charter schools, local district schools, or homeschooling.

I am adamantly opposed to Common Core and the further intrusion of the federal government on the rights of parents to make decisions regarding their own children. I am opposed to federal and state data collection efforts on our children. I am opposed to the lack of common sense and the ridiculous atmosphere that government mandates create, that would make a criminal out of a child who points a finger at another child or plays cops and robbers in the playground like millions of law abiding citizens used to do as kids.
