Barletta Statement on Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood V. Burwell

Statement

Date: June 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Lou Barletta, PA-11, today issued a statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the case involving religious freedom and the Affordable Care Act, titled Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood v. Burwell. The court ruled that employers who have religious objections may opt out of contraception coverage requirements under the law commonly known as Obamacare.

Barletta's statement is as follows:

"This ruling is a clear victory for religious liberty in this country, a fundamental unalienable right that has always been protected by the First Amendment to our Constitution. Obamacare has many objectionable mandates, but among the most offensive was the requirement that employers provide certain kinds of health coverage, even if that coverage violates their religious beliefs. The ruling affirms what I have always believed -- that no one should have to choose between their God and their government."
