Congressman Joe Garcia Issues Statement on HHS v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.

Statement

Date: June 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Representative Joe Garcia issued the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court decision in HHS v. Hobby Lobby Stores, INC. The decision strikes down a provision of the Affordable Care Act allowing closely-held corporations to opt out of a provision of the ACA mandating that employers provide contraception coverage when it conflicts with their religious beliefs.

"Today's ruling is very unfortunate for women's rights across the nation and our state. There are 33 Hobby Lobby's operating in Florida. As a result, this decision will impede hundreds of women in Florida from accessing the care they need," said Congressman Joe Garcia. "By opting out of this provision, Hobby Lobby is infringing on the choices that women can make about their bodies. We know that providing women with birth control helps decrease abortion rates and 99% of sexually active women in the U.S. have used contraception. Fundamentally, this case is about taking personal health care decisions out of the hands of women. Healthcare decisions should be made by patients and their doctors, not bosses and corporate executives."
