Issue Position: Public Safety

Issue Position

Sadly, Genesee County is the violent crime capital of the country which means public safety should and has to be a priority to elected officials at all levels. The stigma of crime must be addressed if we are going to revitalize our economy and bring business and jobs to our area. With our record crime rate, the Genesee County Jail stays at maximum capacity at all times requiring law enforcement to make priorities on arrests. Sadly it also encourages a "catch & release" system with too many offenders. As a State Representative, I have made public safety a priority by voting to fund 2 new state police academies. These additional state troopers will help make sure that our most dangerous cities have additional police on the ground fighting crime to keep all of our communities safe.

My first piece of legislation was "Dominick's Law". A tough on crime bill that strengthens the penalty for child abuse in Michigan. This new law makes it clear that child abuse will not be tolerated in Michigan and anyone who harms a child will be dealt with harshly.
