STATEMENT OF SENATOR TOM HARKIN (D-IA) ON THE PASSING OF POPE JOHN PAUL II

"I join people throughout the world in mourning the passing of Pope John Paul II. This pope was more than a major spiritual leader. He was one of the great and consequential figures of our time. He was a man of peace, yet also a fighter - for people living in poverty, under tyranny and in the shadows.

"Pope John Paul II will be remembered for his contribution to the liberation of Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe, as well as for the tenacity, courage and dignity of his last months. He was a unifier of faiths, nations and generations, and he inspired millions with his moral and social leadership. His legacy is one of strong faith and a compassionate ministry."
