Schatz Announces $5 Million for Honolulu Public Transit

Press Release

Location: Unknown

Today, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai"i) announced that the City and County of Honolulu will receive a $5 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to maintain Honolulu's bus system.

"Investing in Honolulu's bus system means that the many residents who depend on it to get to school or work every day will continue to have an affordable way to get around," Senator Schatz said. "This funding will maintain Honolulu's buses, easing traffic congestion and cutting commute times."

The funds will be used to purchase 10 60-foot articulated diesel replacement buses. Honolulu's TheBus system currently operates 111 60-foot articulated buses, with an average system-wide annual ridership of 73.8 million passenger trips.

The FTA's State of Good Repair Program aims to maintain and improve America's buses and bus facilities. This grant program provides federal funding to ensure public transit systems across the country operate safely, efficiently, reliably and sustainably so that communities can offer balanced transportation choices.
