Schwartz Statement on the Republican Legislation to Slash Critical Transportation Funding

Statement

Date: June 10, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Transportation

U.S. Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz (PA-13) issued the following statement today after voting against Republican legislation that would slash funding for critical transportation and urban development programs.

"Pennsylvania's manufacturers, entrepreneurs, small business owners and everyday commuters require a first-rate, modern transportation system. Today, our roads, bridges, and transit infrastructure are crumbling--endangering travelers, lengthening commutes, and holding back our economic growth. The Republican bill only makes matters worse, slashing investment in Amtrak, TIGER grants, and other priorities critical to the people and businesses of Southeastern Pennsylvania."

The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act provides annual funding for transportation infrastructure and other important development priorities. The legislation reduces funding for Amtrak by $200 million and slashes Tiger grants --which have benefited SEPTA and other local transportation priorities in Southeastern PA-- by $500 million.
