Sen. Jason Carter issued the following statement after President Obama signed legislation authorizing federal funding for the Savannah Harbor deepening project:
"The Savannah Harbor deepening project is hugely important for people and businesses across our state. Our Congressional representatives did great work breaking through the partisan gridlock in Washington to hold the federal government accountable to its commitment to Georgia.
"While some in our state had a knee-jerk reaction this spring that threatened the future of the project, I am glad that cooler heads prevailed and our Congressional leaders were able to work across party lines to deliver for Georgia. This is the path I advocated in March, and I am glad to see it is leading to results."
Carter authored a Savannah Morning News op-ed in March laying out his proposal to move the deepening project forward. He wrote, "Put simply, this project is too important to allow one Washington setback to derail it. But in order to get back on track, our leaders must set partisan politics aside No matter how angry we are, now is the time to bring people together in a constructive way to solve this crucial problem."
