Congresswoman Fudge Statement on Federal Court Decision to Restore Early Voting Days in Ohio

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) applauds today's decision by a federal judge who ruled the law enacted by the Ohio Legislature prohibiting voting on the weekend and Monday before an election is unconstitutional and violates the 14th Amendment rights of Ohio voters. U.S. District Judge Peter Economus of the Southern District of Ohio ordered that early in-person voting be restored from the last Friday before an election to the close of business on the day before the election.

"I am elated the court was definitive in its decision that neither Secretary of State Husted, nor the Ohio Legislature can continue to be impediments to the right to vote, nor can they continue their assault on our democracy," Congresswoman Fudge stated. "This decision is a victory for Ohio voters."

"The US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio made the right call to protect Ohio voters' participation in our democracy. The last three days of early voting in Ohio are critical, particularly the Sunday before Election Day when churches use their vans and buses to get voters to the polls. It is time for the Republican-controlled legislature in Ohio to drop their efforts to suppress the voices of seniors, communities of color, students, and the elderly who are most likely to vote during that period."
