ISSA REGAINS INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND JUDICIARY COMMITTEE POSTS

January 6th, 2005 - Washington, D.C. - Congressman Darrell Issa announced today that he has been named to serve on the House International Relations and Judiciary Committees in the 109th Congress. Issa has been granted a leave of absence from the Energy and Commerce Committee in order to resume his service on the International Relations and Judiciary Committees. "I am pleased that the Speaker and the House Republican Steering Committee granted my request for a leave of absence so that I can concentrate on immigration reform, supporting the US led effort to bring peace to the Middle East and the effort to bring democracy to Iraq and other countries in the region," said Issa. "This decision will allow me to focus on these issues at a critical time and return to my work on Energy and Commerce at a later date."

As a returning member of the International Relations and Judiciary Committees, Issa hopes to work to effect real immigration reform and lend his experience in Middle East policy to the American effort to bring lasting peace to the region. "International Relations and Judiciary are a key combination of committees to bring security to our homeland. We must both promote understanding of our ideas around the world and strengthen security for our citizens at home while maintaining an American tradition of liberty," said Congressman Issa.

As a freshman legislator, Issa served on the International Relations and Judiciary Committees until his appointment to the Energy and Commerce Committee during the 108th Congress. "Although I am taking a leave of absence from Energy and Commerce, I remain committed to the adoption of a national energy policy, the promotion of clean technologies like fuel saving hybrid vehicles, and the development of clean energy resources like the Lake Elsinore Advanced Pump Storage Facility." As a member of the Judiciary Committee, Issa expects to focus on immigration reform and intellectual property rights issues. As a member of the International Relations panel, Issa plans to work toward peace in the Middle East, with an emphasis on promoting President Bush's two state solution for the Palestinian question. Issa also intends to focus on rallying support for the continuing War on Terrorism, the effort to bring democracy to Iraq and the region and other foreign policy objectives of the United States.
