Letter to Maria Contreras-Sweet, Administrator of the US Small Business Administration - Request for Disaster Assistance

Letter

Date: May 27, 2014

Dear Administrator Contreras-Sweet:

I write in support of Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman's request for disaster assistance related to the severe storms in Seward and surrounding counties in Nebraska. These May storms caused significant damage in south-central Nebraska.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, along with personnel from your agency, estimate that the tornadoes and severe storms caused extensive structural damage to over 150 homes and 30 businesses and non-profits, thereby meeting the threshold for a disaster declaration from the SBA.

Low interest disaster loans provided by the SBA are an important tool in the aftermath of a disaster. At such a difficult time, it is important to assure small businesses that economic recovery is around the corner and while the storm clean-up continues, the SBA is there to help them get back on track.

I applaud local and state leaders, as well as non-profit groups, who moved swiftly to deliver aid and clear debris. When affected by natural disasters, Nebraskans have demonstrated time and again their resilience and ability to work together on recovery efforts. This was no exception. The Federal Government now has an opportunity to partner with the state and other responders in aiding recovery efforts.

I fully support Governor Heineman's disaster request and appreciate your sincere and prompt consideration. If I or my staff can be of assistance to you in this process, please do not hesitate to call my office at (202) 224-4224.

Sincerely,

Mike Johanns
United States Senator
