Today, President Obama announced that he has accepted the resignation of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki and appointed Deputy Secretary Sloan Gibson as the acting Secretary. Sloan Gibson was appointed to his position in February of 2014. Representative Tim Walz, Member of the VA Committee and the highest ranking enlisted soldier to ever serve in Congress, released the following statement:

"Everyone knows General Shinseki is an honorable man who was unfortunately misled and let down by those working under him but, as noted, the buck ultimately stops with him. It was clear that new leadership was needed in order to end the distractions, identify the VA's problems and take swift action to fix them, and restore veterans' trust in the system. With his resignation, General Shinseki proved once again that he is putting veterans first.

"Moving forward, I will continue working in a bipartisan manner with Veterans Service Organizations, Chairman Miller, Ranking Member Michaud, and others on the VA Committee to get all the facts on the table, hold those responsible for harming veterans accountable, and reform the VA to ensure this never happens again. Our veterans deserve nothing less."
