Improving the VA

Press Release

Date: June 4, 2014

In an effort to reach an agreement to help improve the Department of Veterans' Affairs Sen. Bernie Sanders chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee met with several Democrat and Republican leaders on Wednesday. Sanders met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Sen. Richard Burr, the ranking Republican on the Veterans Affairs Committee, Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee and Sen. John McCain.

Afterward Sen. Sanders told MSNBC's Ed Schultz "We introduced legislation months ago that would have significantly helped veterans in terms of health care, education and employment. I was surprised and disappointed that when we brought it to a vote we had all of two Republicans who would support it." Sanders legislation was supported by 27 veterans organizations representing more than 20 million veterans. Sanders continued "If Republicans choose not to provide the VA with the resources they need I think people all over this country will say "You talk a good game but you're not giving them [the VA] what they need.'"
