Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Brett Guthrie today voted in support of H.R. 3361, the Uniting and Strengthening America by Fulfilling Rights and Ending Eavesdropping, Dragnet-collection, and Online Monitoring (USA FREEDOM) Act.

"This bill will end the bulk collection of American's communications records while reforming the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) and increasing transparency," said Congressman Guthrie. "I cosponsored the bill in its previous form, which was stronger and took additional steps to protect Americans and our security. While I am disappointed that the final version is slightly less strong, I believe this bill still takes significant and importation action in ending bulk data collection."

H.R. 3361 was introduced by Congressman Sensenbrenner (WI-5) in response to information exposed by Edward Snowden that the National Security Agency (NSA) was collecting bulk information by Americans from phone and email communications.

"This bill addresses concerns about bulk collection, and while not perfect I believe that inaction would leave opportunities for rogue actors to once again abuse our national security resources," added Congressman Guthrie.
