Press Release

Date: June 5, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Today-- Congressman Rubén Hinojosa released the following statement encouraging individuals to participate in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA).

"Since its inception two years ago, there have been over 560,000 young people who have benefitted from DACA. Today's DHS announcement will ensure that these individuals and others eligible to apply have the opportunity to continue benefitting from the Deferred Action program. I encourage all those eligible to apply for the DACA renewal process, to do so as soon as possible."

"DACA recipients are a talented group of young individuals who were brought to this country through no fault of their own and are contributing members of our society. America is stronger because of the skills and talent these DACA recipients possess and contribute to our country. In the end however, we must remember that the only way to permanently address our nation's immigration challenges is through comprehensive immigration reform," said U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa.

A few key points to consider in applying for the DACA renewal process:

* Under the DACA renewal process, recipients will be safe from deportation for another two year period.

* DACA recipients are encouraged to request renewal 4-5 months ahead of the expiration date. For those who are current DACA recipients, the grants will begin to expire in September, so recipients are encouraged to submit their renewal application as soon as possible.

* There is a $465 filing fee, with limited fee exemptions available.

* Regardless of age, all current DACA recipients who reapply will be considered. Current DACA recipients are not too old to renew - recipients to not age-out of the program.

* There are 1.15 million individuals who are eligible for DACA but have not yet applied for the program. Individuals who have never applied for DACA are still able to apply as long as they meet the necessary criteria required for first-time applicants.

* Applicants are encouraged to be mindful of potential scams and to seek assistance from the right place. If you need assistance with a DACA application, please contact the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
