U.S. Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI) released the following statement in response to the resignation of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric Shinseki:

"Secretary Shinseki's resignation does not solve the systemic problems that we are seeing at the VA. These problems have been building for years.

"The standard should always be what is in the best interests of our veterans. It was increasingly clear that Secretary Shinseki was becoming more of a distraction rather than the answer to solve the problems with our VA health care system.

"There is a lot of work that needs to be done to ensure that our veterans receive the care and treatment that they deserve. Our nation's contract with our veterans is a solemn obligation that must be met. This will not be easy, nor will it be cheap but it must be done.

"Sec. Shinseki was wounded in Vietnam, served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, and had successes at the VA from improving access to PTSD treatment to reducing the number of homeless veterans. We thank him for his service to our country."
