Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after President Obama announced he was taking executive action to reduce the burden of student loan debt:

"If we want to build a 21st century economy that works for all Americans, then we need to make higher education affordable for all Americans. Currently, the burden of student loan debt hangs over our economy and prevents many young Americans from fully reaching their potential and realizing their dreams. I strongly support the President taking action today to ease the burden of crushing student loan debt. But Congress must take action to fully address this issue and ensure that all Americans have the opportunity to attend college without being shackled with debt for life. I encourage my Republican colleagues to work with Democrats and pass Rep. John Tierney's 'Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act' because we know that the surest pathway to the middle class is through a college education. We must do more to make this a reality for more Americans."
