U.S. Congressman Bill Enyart (IL-12) announced a $2.6 million grant awarded to Community Health and Emergency Services, Inc. (CHESI), in Cairo.

"This grant is vital for CHESI operations," said Enyart. "When I toured the Cairo facility last month I saw firsthand the need for expanded services and additional equipment. These dollars will go to directly improving the lives and healthcare of Southern Illinoisans."

The Department of Health and Human Services awarded the $2,678,640 grant to CHESI. The grant will be utilized to continue operations such as medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare. CHESI serves the poorest four counties in the state, which rank among the poorest counties in the entire country.

"This continuation of support for CHESI is the difference between being able to operate, and not being able to operate. In areas like ours, primary healthcare services could not be sustained without the level of federal support we now receive," said Fred Bernstein, CEO of CHESI.

Patients at CHESI commonly suffer from diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and asthma/COPD. Morbid obesity, smoking, a lack of exercise, substance abuse and depression are often seen at the healthcare facility. Many female patients have not had preventive health services like mammograms and pap smears, while many adult residents have never seen a dentist.

Enyart and Bernstein met last month to discuss the challenges community health organizations face. Additionally, Enyart toured the Cairo facility and discussed healthcare concerns with patients. Approximately 60% of CHESI patients rely on Medicare and Medicaid for health insurance needs.
