Sabo Deplores House-Passed Budget
March 17, 2005

Congressman Martin Olav Sabo (D-MN) today voted against H. Con. Res. 95, the Republican-drafted budget resolution that was passed in the House of Representatives. With large tax cuts, ballooning deficits and deep cuts in programs intended to keep Americans out of poverty, Congressman Sabo believes this budget dramatically hurts instead of helps our country.

"Republicans say they're making tough decisions to balance the budget. But it will do nothing to address the chronic, long-term deficit problem," Congressman Sabo said. "Until Congress restores pay-as-you-go budget rules that apply also to tax cuts and mandatory spending, we will continue to dig the deficit hole deeper."

Stating that they are attempting to balance the budget, Republicans cut funding for Medicaid, veterans' health care, education, environmental protection and community and regional development. But the tax cuts that are extended in the budget represent a much larger cost to the government.

"Even with their deep spending cuts, the Republican budget actually increases deficits due to the cost of their tax schemes," Congressman Sabo said.

The House and Senate budget resolutions serve as blueprints for major spending and tax decisions for fiscal year 2006.
