Statement

Date: May 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement in response to the resignation of General Eric Shinseki as Secretary of Veterans Affairs:

"I want to thank General Shinseki for his incredible dedication and service to this country, to our troops and their families, and to our veterans as an officer, a General, an Army Chief-of-Staff, and most recently as Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

"With a change in leadership at the Department of Veterans Affairs, I hope swift action will be taken to fix the problems that have plagued this system for decades. Our heroes returning home from war have given up so much for our freedom, and drastic changes must be made both in Congress and in the Administration so that they are treated with the dignity and respect that they so desperately deserve. I urge my colleagues to put aside the party politics and to take the necessary actions to fix the issues at Veterans Affairs as soon as possible. Let's fulfill our promises to our veterans and provide them the same level of commitment that they have given us. "
