Hoyer Statement on Nomination of Secretary Shaun Donovan as Director of the Office of Management and Budget and Julián Castro as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama announced his intent to nominate Secretary Shaun Donovan as Director of the Office of Management and Budget and Mayor Julián Castro as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development:

"I join in congratulating Secretary Shaun Donovan on his nomination to serve as the next Director of the Office of Management and Budget. In selecting him, President Obama has chosen a Director who has proven himself to be a smart, capable, and effective leader, both in leading the Department of Housing and Urban Development and in his previous role as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

"The job of OMB Director has rarely been more critical. Our nation's long term budget outlook presents us with serious challenges that demand of us a thoughtful, careful, and balanced approach. If we are to move closer toward fiscal sustainability, both parties in Congress and the White House must all work together to make the tough choices necessary. Secretary Donovan has the experience, the intellect, and the dedication required for success as the Administration's top budget writer, and I look forward to working closely with him to achieve the goal of setting our country back on a sound fiscal path.

"President Obama has also nominated an outstanding candidate to be the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Julián Castro, as Mayor of San Antonio, has made access to affordable housing and home-ownership one of the top priorities of his tenure in office. He is a leader who knows how to get things done and understands the housing and development challenges being faced across the country.

"Mayor Castro's entire life has been spent in and around public service, and I have witnessed his family's deep sense of civic responsibility firsthand in meeting Mayor Castro and through my work in Congress with his brother, Rep. Joaquin Castro. I look forward to working with Mayor Castro once he takes the reins at HUD to advance the causes of home-ownership, affordable housing, and the renewal of urban areas in need of investment."
