Grassley Welcomes Benghazi Select Committee

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa today made the following comment on the House of Representatives' creation of a select committee to look into the attack on the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012.

"I support the House of Representatives' creation of a select committee to look into Benghazi. I'm a co-sponsor of S. Res. 225, a resolution that expresses the sense of Congress that we should create a joint select committee to investigate and report on the attack. This President pledged to have the most transparent administration in history. By his own standard, he's arguably the most stonewalling. Congress has tried for 18 months to get information about what happened in Benghazi and how the Administration tried to characterize what happened. Some information has come to light, but only through some whistleblowers and the persistence of Congress and members of the public who want answers. The recent release of the Rhodes email occurred only because the State Department was forced to release the email in response to a FOIA request.

"Through my own oversight over the years, I've had problems getting information from administrations of either political party. My interest in Benghazi is in making sure the White House is transparent with the American people. If news that's damaging or embarrassing to the United States is spun or suppressed, that causes the American people to lose trust in their government. And it diminishes the ability of Congress and the executive branch to identify and fix the serious problems that have been downplayed. We need to get to the bottom of what happened in Benghazi in a definitive, transparent way."
