U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) says part of the solution to the recent troubles at the Department of Veterans Affairs may lie in legislation he's co-sponsoring with his colleague from Florida, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).

The legislation would give the secretary of the VA broader authority to make personnel changes by removing non-performing senior executives.

"The veterans are not getting the medical care, the treatment that they need," said Nelson, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. "Some heads need to roll."

"The VA bureaucracy has gotten to the point that it cannot respond to the desperate need of our veterans," the lawmaker added.

Similar legislation passed in the House yesterday by a vote of 390-33.
