Location: Washington, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

Today, Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) supported bipartisan legislation that will encourage transparency and growth in public charter schools in Northern Michigan and across the United States, while encouraging more innovation in education. H.R. 10, the "Success and Opportunity through Quality Charter Schools Act," was passed by the House earlier today.

"Education is incredibly important in Northern Michigan and across the country. This legislation allows states to have more power in developing and expanding charter schools. We have great charter schools in Northern Michigan, like Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy up in Wilson and Bingham Academy in Alpena. These schools allow parents to become more involved in their children's education, while opening doors for students and giving them the opportunity to learn and grow," said Dr. Benishek, a lifelong resident of Northern Michigan.

The Success and Opportunity through Quality Charter Schools Act is bipartisan legislation that promotes development and expansion of charter schools, while encouraging these schools to reach out to at-risk students, students with disabilities and English learners.

"Increasing community involvement in schooling and ensuring that our children and grandchildren receive a quality foundation through education has been one of my top priorities while in Washington. Improving vocational education up here in Northern Michigan has been incredibly important in working to guarantee that future generations can secure good paying jobs in the area. I will continue to work with local communities to increase opportunities for education--from public charters, to technical career training, to partnerships with local community colleges and private industry--throughout the district. I want all kids in the area to have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream when they grow up," added Dr. Benishek.

Vocational education and proper job training has been a top priority for Dr. Benishek during his time in Congress. Dr. Benishek has hosted educational round table meetings in Northern Michigan with educators and job providers, and continues to explore proposals to promote vocational education in the First District so that individuals have the proper training to secure the jobs available.
