Enyart Tours CHESI Facility in Cairo

Press Release

Date: April 23, 2014
Location: Cairo, IL

U.S. Congressman Bill Enyart (IL-12) spent the morning in Cairo, touring a community health center and discussing current issues with Cairo Mayor Tyrone Coleman.

Enyart was joined by Community Health and Emergency Services CEO, Fred Bernstein, on a tour of the Cairo facility. Bernstein and Enyart discussed the importance of facilities like CHESI to the Southern Illinois area. The organization runs 12 centers, and has provided health services to the region for 32 years.

"This facility is doing great work for folks right here in Cairo. By providing health care, dental services, mammography, radiology services, and even nutritional counseling and diabetes control programs, they're helping to ensure a healthy future for Southern Illinois," said Enyart. "Speaking with patients here at the clinic, makes me even more concerned about proposed cuts to Medicare in the Republican budget. The people, who use this facility and facilities just like it across Southern Illinois, need Medicare to get by. I simply cannot let them turn Medicare into a voucher program, while balancing the budget on the backs of our seniors."

Enyart has been fighting for Medicare and Medicare Advantage, and recently took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to continue that fight. During his speech Enyart stated, "Seniors don't need a healthcare coupon, they need healthcare." Enyart will continue meeting with community health organizations and constituents in the 12th District of Illinois, in order to maintain the Medicare program.

Following the CHESI tour, Enyart met with Cairo Mayor Tyrone Coleman to discuss current issues and the state of the city.
