Sessions Applauds House Passage of FY 2006 Budget
Budgets funds priorities, holds the line on spending

Washington, Mar 17 - U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-Dallas), a Member of the House Committee on the Budget, today applauded House passage of the fiscal year (FY) 2006 federal budget. The House-passed budget focuses on continuing the nation's economic expansion, strengthening our homeland and national security, and eliminating wasteful government spending.

The Budget Resolution passed by the House sets appropriate priorities for moving our nation forward, protecting our homeland, and maintaining a strong defense. This Budget also maintains pro-growth economic policies that ensure that strong, sustained economic growth and job creation continue here in America. At the same time, this Budget Resolution takes the necessary steps to slow the growth of our currently unsustainable rate of federal spending, and continues our work to reduce the federal deficit.

The Budget Resolution passed by the House today slows the growth of mandatory spending by 0.1% over five years, from its current rate of 6.4% over the 2004-2010 period to 6.3%. It also holds non-defense discretionary spending to less than the rate of inflation, and it keeps us on track to cut the deficit in half by 2009.

"This year's Budget takes some tough but necessary steps to slow spending while ensuring the Nation's priorities are met," said Sessions. "Here in Washington, it is important to remember that the more mandatory spending grows, the less money is available for other priorities.

"We must face the need to curb our unsustainable rate of spending growth," Sessions continued. "The last time we made any kind of real effort to look at the bulk of our spending was almost a decade ago, back in 1997. It is time to look again, and with this budget we do."

"This is a fiscally sound budget plan that will help our economy to expand and ensure our security while reigning in the spending that threatens to drag our nation farther into the red," said Sessions. "I will continue to work to see that our government functions efficiently and produces results for Americans."

The FY 2006 Budget Resolution, H.Con.Res. 95, passed the House by a vote of 218-214.
