Today, Rep. Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) issued the following statement on Veteran Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric Shinseki testifying before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee about the preventable deaths and injuries due to unacceptable delays for veterans waiting for medical appointments and care:
"I'm outraged by the unacceptable treatment of our veterans, who have sacrificed so much serving our country and defending our freedom. The appointment delays and preventable deaths at the Phoenix VA Hospital are entirely unacceptable. That's why two weeks ago I voted to get to the bottom of this. And with other very disturbing incidents coming to light, I urge Secretary Shinseki to commit to ensuring that every VA medical facility across the country is held accountable for providing quality care for our veterans," said Esty.
On April 30, 2014, Rep. Esty voted for HR 4486, which would, among other things, increase the funds available for the VA Office of Inspector General for an investigation into the alleged misrepresentation of appointment times and the deaths of veterans at the Phoenix VA Hospital. As always, any veterans in Connecticut's 5th District who are experiencing delays with their care are urged to reach out to Esty's office at 860-223-8412.
