Statement from U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker on the Confirmation of Jay Williams as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development

Statement

Date: May 14, 2014

Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker issued the following statement on the confirmation of Jay Williams as Assistant Secretary for Economic Development at the U.S. Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA).

"I am pleased that the U.S. Senate has confirmed Jay Williams as Assistant Secretary for Economic Development at the Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA). As the only federal agency focused exclusively on economic development, EDA plays a vital role in building sustainable economies in communities across the United States. Given Jay's wealth of private and public sector experience, I am confident in his ability to lead economic development efforts at the Department of Commerce and help build the foundation and set the conditions for economic growth and success in communities across the country.

Most recently, Jay led federal efforts to revitalize the American auto industry as Director of the Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers. He also spearheaded the economic redevelopment of Youngstown, Ohio, both while serving as mayor for five years and as head of Youngstown's Community Development Agency. Jay understands that promoting innovation, and preparing American workers and communities for growth and success in our global economy is a top priority for the Obama Administration. I look forward to working with Jay and the EDA team to strengthen manufacturing and promote regional collaboration and innovation across America, all key priorities in our Department's "Open for Business Agenda."
