Congressman Mike Pompeo, R-Kansas, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court's ruling in Town of Greece v. Galloway that Christian prayers could be spoken at the start of local council meetings. The Court ruled that they were in line with long national traditions, and could continue so long as the prayers did not denigrate non-Christians or try to win converts.
"I am glad that the Supreme Court has upheld Americans' ability to open legislative sessions with a prayer. To paraphrase the Declaration of Independence, we are endowed with rights by our Creator, particularly the right to religious freedom and speech. This freedom is a cornerstone of American civic life and provides a moral foundation for our republic, one that ensures our nation to continue to be the greatest and freest in the world."
