Congressman Messer Says He's "Grateful' for Supreme Court Decision on Prayer at Public Meetings

Congressman Luke Messer (IN-06) released the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision Monday to allow prayer at the start of government meetings.

"I'm grateful the Supreme Court made the right decision today. Our nation has long recognized the use of prayer by legislative bodies for solemnizing official occasions and seeking wisdom and guidance in making consequential decisions. Doing so neither violates the First Amendment's establishment clause nor harms the rights of those who do not share the same beliefs. Our nation is strongest when it humbles itself in prayer, recognizing our own limitations and the time-honored truth that "in God we trust.'"

Congressman Messer was one of 49 Members of Congress who signed an amicus curiae brief last year in support of permitting legislative prayer prior to public meetings.
