Hoyer Statement on Cinco de Mayo

Statement

Date: May 5, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today commemorating Cinco de Mayo:

"I join in celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the anniversary of the historic Battle of Puebla and an occasion of great pride for millions of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. When the outnumbered Mexican defenders of Puebla defeated an invading French force in 1862, it signaled not only a reassertion of Mexico's independence but the shared determination of Mexico and the United States to work together to ensure the freedom of nations in our hemisphere.

"I am proud to serve alongside many distinguished Mexican-American colleagues in Congress, who continue to bring an important perspective to our nation's government, and on Cinco de Mayo I join in thanking them and millions of Mexican Americans for their contributions to our national life. I will continue to work closely with Mexican-American organizations to stand up for a strong U.S.-Mexico relationship, for equal rights for all Americans, for comprehensive reform of our broken immigration system, and for the creation of jobs and opportunities that help all of our people secure a place in a growing middle class."
