President Ronald Reagan once explained that the best way to measure the success of a government program was by counting the number of people who no longer needed it. Sadly, today, there are far too many of our fellow Idahoans who must rely upon the government simply to make ends meet. I can assure you that the vast majority of them would rather not have to. They don't want to pay for their family's meals with food stamps, raise their kids in government housing or use Medicaid at the doctor's office. They would rather have good-paying jobs that allow them to provide for their own families, buy a house they want to live in, and enjoy all the other benefits of employment. As your governor, I will lead the effort to make healthcare accessible, affordable, and of the high quality you expect from providers in America. We will encourage competition in the marketplace and empower Idahoans through a patient-centric system that takes care of the most vulnerable among us. We all agree that those who need care should have it, and we should help those that can't help themselves--but nobody wants their tax dollars spent subsidizing people who earn up to $92,000 like some other state's leaders are promoting. In short, Medicaid expansion means more government control. When it comes to health care, the people of Idaho need to be in control.
