Meadows Signs Letter Demanding DOJ Turn Over IRS Communications

Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC) signed on to a joint letter with members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to Attorney General Eric Holder demanding the Department of Justice (DOJ) turn over all communications related to IRS targeting of 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organizations dated from January 1, 2009 to present.

The letter comes on the heels of revelations that the Justice Department was in communication with ousted IRS official, Lois Lerner, about potentially prosecuting tax-exempt organizations for alleged false claims made on IRS reports related to political activity. Ms. Lerner was formerly the Director of Exempt Organizations at IRS and is believed to be a central figure in the targeting of political organizations. She has thus far refused to testify or answer questions from Congress regarding her involvement.

"I applaud Chairman Issa and the rest of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee for demanding accountability from the Justice Department," Rep. Meadows said.

"These recent revelations have seriously called into question DOJ's credibility to investigate the Tea Party targeting by the IRS. We need answers from them," Meadows added.

The letter requests that DOJ turn over all communications related to tax-exempt organizations since January 1, 2009, all communications involving Lerner, and all documents and communications related to the potential prosecution of tax-exempt groups reports dating back to January 2009.

The letter also requests that Lerner's known point of contact at DOJ, Richard Pilger, the Director of Elections Crimes Branch at DOJ, be made available to the Committee for questioning.
