Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement on joining the Presidential Delegation to the Holy See to attend the Canonization Mass of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II at the Vatican on April 27, 2014:

"I am honored to represent our country on such a holy occasion for the Catholic community. Both Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II were instrumental leaders on social justice who left a lasting mark not only on Catholic hearts but on people of all faiths around the world. By calling for the Second Vatican Council, Pope John XXIII helped make the Church more accessible to the faithful. And during the Cold War, Pope John Paul II spoke powerfully for those seeking to build free and just societies. As they are canonized, their messages of peace and hope will continue to inspire the world."
