Governor Tomblin Recognizes National Green Ribbon School Award Recipients

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today recognized Eastwood Elementary (Monongalia County) and Cameron High School (Marshall County) for being among 48 schools from across the country to receive the Green Ribbon Schools award from the U.S. Department of Education.

"This is an exciting award for the teachers and students of Eastwood Elementary and Cameron High School and highlights their efforts to incorporate sustainable educational practices and outdoor learning into daily life," Gov. Tomblin said. "These students are gaining hands-on experiences that will prepare them with the skills they need to be successful as they continue their education and begin developing their own sustainable practices to fit their lifestyle."

The U.S. Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools award honors schools for their efforts to increase eco-friendly practices while decreasing utility costs, encouraging a healthy lifestyle among students and staff, and ensuring effective environmental and sustainability education. The award is part of an overarching U.S. Department of Education goal to identify initiatives that result in enhanced student engagement, higher graduation rates, and workforce preparedness.
