Statement on Equal Pay Day

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01) released the following statement on Equal Pay Day 2014, which marks the day when women's wages catch up to what men were paid in the previous year:

"Throughout our history, we as a nation have overcome many obstacles in ensuring equality for every American, but we still have work to do. Equal Pay Day is a reminder that women in Hawaii still earn 82 cents to every dollar earned by men. The national average is worse -- 77 cents for every dollar a man makes -- even when women compose nearly half of the U.S. workforce.

"President Obama said it best in his State of the Union address, "When women succeed, America succeeds,' and I applaud him for signing two executive orders today that will make it harder for federal contractors to hide pay discrimination. I believe that every hardworking American deserves to earn a living based on the quality of their work and efforts, not their gender. That is why I am a proud cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act and pledge to continue to fight to make equal pay a reality."
