Boustany Statement on Shortened Red Snapper Season

Statement

Date: April 14, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., M.D., (R-South Louisiana) issued the following statement after the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council Reef Fish Committee recently decided to limit red snapper season to 11 days:

"Limiting our fishermen to only 11 days of work has serious consequences to South Louisiana. The Gulf Coast has no choice but to consider new management methods for red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico. Over the last few years it has become obvious federal management of red snapper in the Gulf has been a disaster, with dates and regulations constantly changing, sometimes even after seasons have already opened.

"It's unbelievable the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced on Thursday it will reduce the recreational season from 40 to 11 days this year. Recreational fishing plays an integral role in the heritage and way of life of communities across South Louisiana. Limiting the red snapper season to merely eleven days is unacceptable to anglers across our state."
