Neugebauer Votes to Protect Part-Time Workers from Cuts

Press Release

Congressman Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 2575, the Save American Workers Act. The bill, which passed by a vote of 248-179, ensures businesses won't be forced to cut employee hours to comply with Obamacare.

"An arbitrary definition in Obamacare is forcing businesses to cut back on employee hours," Neugebauer explained. "This bill fixes that and allows businesses and employees to decide their hours based on what is best for them--not the President's health care law."

Obamacare imposes harsh fines on businesses that don't provide health care to their full-time employees. It also defines full-time employment as a 30-hour work week, in contradiction of the standard legal definition of a 40-hour week.

"Hourly workers are being hit hard by this law," Neugebauer said. "Businesses that were happy to employ part-time workers for more than 30 hour per week are being forced to cut employee hours to ensure they meet the Administration's new definition of part-time. Fewer hours mean smaller paychecks, and that's a real problem for part-time workers."

Neugebauer co-sponsored the Save American Workers Act, which repeals the 30-hour definition of a full time employee in Obamacare and replaces it with the standard 40-hour definition for a full time employee. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), repealing the 30-hour rule will lower taxes on employers by $63 billion and increase wages by $75 billion.

"This legislation protects workers from unnecessary pay-cuts," Neugebauer said. "I'll continue to fight to protect West Texans from the harmful consequences of Obamacare."
